Falls for children aged up to 11

Falls are the main reason why children are admitted into Jersey's hospital when they have had an accident.crying child

The height that children can fall from tends to get higher the older they are. Their actions are more adventurous as they push their boundaries doing things that they have been told not to do or because their friends told them to do it.

  • The stairs are still a danger. Children need to learn not to leave things on the stairs, hold onto the banisters when walking up and down and that it is not an area to play on.
  • Children live to play! If they are bored they will often go and find something more exciting to do.
  • Children need to have the dangers of building sites explained - there is never a good time to visit a site.
  • Some play carries more risk than others, this does not mean they should not be doing it - just that there are things they can do to greatly reduce the risk. Whether it be wearing a helmet or having simple rules with adult supervision. Remember, helmets should be worn on bikes, skateboards and other wheeled toys.
