Be Bright, Be Seen
5th October 2009

As a motorist it's hard to see pedestrians if their clothing is dark - and to be honest a lot of school uniforms are.
This is an issue, paticularly with 11 year old children who have moved up to secondary school where longer journeys are often made on foot. In Jersey on average we see 25 children hit by a car per year. So who is most likely to get hurt? The average age is 11 years and above when they are walking home from school.
There are things you can do to make a diffrence.
- Having a brightly coloured bag with a reflective high-visibility strip
- Fluorescent armbands or tabards can be worn over coats and clothing - if you feel there is no way you would wear these, what about fluorescent stickers on your coat or bag?
- Reflective clothing needs to be worn at night because florescent colours do not show up in the dark
- As a motorist be extra carefull driving after 3pm, keep an eye out - especially in St Helier as this is the most common parish for pedestrian accidents
- As a pedestrian, find a safe place to cross and just wait a second before you cross the road - make sure the cars have stopped before you cross
