Since 2003, Child Accident Prevention Jersey has been counting cycle helmets on heads every summer! Back then, we found only 23% of children were wearing helmets.
During our 2009 count we were delighted to see the numbers had been rising steadily and were now at 61% out of a random sample of over 130 cyclists. That's a massive 38% increase!
It is hoped that this indicates an increased exceptence of this vital piece of safety equipment. Of course, children are lead by example and the group would like to see iin future counts of adult wearing rates increasing too. In 2009, 19% of adults were seen to be wearing a helmet from a 235 sample, this is a 5% increase from when counting began 6 years ago.
