Play workshop
Playing on a trampoline is great fun and exciting and a great way to keep fit.
Their growing popularity has resulted in an increasing number of people having to go to hospital following accidents on trampolines.
More than one on at a time, lack of supervision, summersualts, falling off and landing awkwardly on the trampoline ar the key causes of trampoline injury.
Since 2004, over 500 children have visited Jersey’s Hospital with trampoline related accidents, 29 being admitted into hospital because of their injuries.
The States of Jersey agreed that cycle helmet legislation should be introduced for all children to wear a helmet when cycling on a road.
So what’s happening in Jersey to make the politicians think that this is important?
On average annually 140 children visit Jersey’s hospital because of a bicycle accident, that’s nearly 1,000 children in the last 7 years.
In 2010, nearly 1/3 of children attended because of a bicycle accident sustained an injury to their head.
Helmets are designed to protect the head by reducing the rate the skull and brain would be accelerated and decelerated by an impact. The helmet acts like a shock absorber, as it is impacted the expanding polystyrene shell of the helmet dissipates the energy over a rapidly increasing area like a cone.
Children tend to ride their bikes often, have less experience at riding their bikes and because children may not have the muscle control or motor coordination that will keep them from falling, running into something or even being able to swerve to avoid something that may run into them
